Claim

The latticework of mental models is useful only when it runs as an internalised operating system that pattern-matches incoming information against many models simultaneously and surfaces the relevant ones automatically. Conscious "look up the right model" use is too slow and biased toward the model the operator most recently read about; deliberate cross-training across decades is what produces qualitatively better decisions.

Mechanism

A model that has to be consciously retrieved arrives after System 1 has already produced an answer — System 2 then post-hoc justifies the System-1 conclusion using the retrieved model, which is the worst of both worlds. An internalised model, by contrast, runs concurrently during the perception phase and shapes which features of the situation are even noticed. The compounding lever is cross-domain breadth: a 30-year-old with 10 models has thinner pattern recognition than a 60-year-old with 80 models, and the gap widens because each new model adds combinatorial pattern-matches with existing ones, not just one extra lookup.

Counter-evidence

Tetlock's Superforecasting research suggests that working less on intuition and more on explicit reasoning processes (Bayesian updating, base-rate consultation) outperforms automatic pattern-matching for forecasting tasks. The "OS philosophy" is harder to operationalise as a teachable skill than explicit checklists, which limits its transferability to junior operators.
